) Come up with a news story from the last 12 months for each of the categories suggested by Harriss, Leiter and Johnson:
  • Conflict - Tension or surprise
  • Progress - Triumph or achievement
  • Disaster - Defeat or destruction
  • Consequence - Effects on individuals or community
  • Prominence - The well-known or famous
  • Novelty - The unusual or emotional
2) What example news story does the Factsheet use to illustrate Galtung and Ruge's News Values? Why is it an appropriate example of a news story likely to gain prominent coverage?

The story they used was "British servicewomen died after afghan bomb blast". it is quite negative and local and therefore it may attract an audience.

3) What is gatekeeping?

Filtering information prior to dissemination. This process is usually done via the editor but this process could be seen as a editor picking another story  In general, gatekeeping is about opening or closing the channels of communication

4) What are the six ways bias can be created in news?

  • Bias through selection and omission
  • Bias through placement
  • Bias by headline
  • Bias by photos, captions and camera angles
  • Bias through the use of names and titles
  • Bias by choice of words

5) How have online sources such as Twitter, bloggers or Wikileaks changed the way news is selected and published?

These ways offers a way for audiences to access news stories that may have been mediated or censored. The fact that Wikileaks only publishes raw material bypasses news values whereas this information is passed on to news institutions which will use the information for their own news genre.
6) Complete the task on the last page of the Factsheet regarding Sky News and Twitter:

  • What does this reveal about how Sky views Twitter as a news source? They are reliable and usually get the information
  • What does it say about how news is being produced? the data from twitter where people are going to twitter to share their experiences.
  • Why might this be a problem for journalistic standards? Itll be harder to access news from people that have important information. Therefore people can upload their information straight yo social media to inform others which makes it hard to compete
7) In your opinion, how has the digital age changed Galtung and Ruge’s news values?

i think digital age has changed it a little bit because of the changing of technology and how quickly it's evolving so the viewers  are able to access news through various ways.

8) How would you update them for 2018? Choose TWO of Galtung and Ruge's news values and say how they have been affected by the growth of digital technology.

The two news values i would choose is balance and visual impact. I think there isn't much balance used to the media and most of the post are becoming more and more negative because people are attracted to it.
