MIGRAIN: January assessment learner response

The January assessment was a good opportunity to learn more about the structure of new Media exams and check we are progressing in the right direction.

The first part of your learner response is to look carefully at your mark, grade and comments from your teacher. If anything doesn't make sense, ask your teacher - that's why we're here!

Your learner response is as follows:

Create a new blog post called 'January assessment learner response' and complete the following tasks:

1) Type up your feedback in full (you don't need to write the mark and grade if you want to keep this confidential).

www- there's not a lot to credit here...the best i can say is that this is a very good wake up call as we move towards the end if year 12 that a levels are demanding and frankly you can't wing it.

ebi- where to start? no evidence of revision or preparation ... very little knowledge or application of theory evident. Similarly, Q1 shows you haven't learned the terminology.

2) Read the mark scheme for this assessment carefully. Identify at least one potential point that you missed out on for each question in the assessment. not using the correct terminology.
 Strategies
 Conglomerate ownership
 Vertical integration
 Horizontal integration
 Diversification
 Synergy
3) On a scale of 1-10 (1 = low, 10 = high), how much revision and preparation did you do for this assessment?
2-34) Look at your answer for Question 1. Did you manage to write about three different strategies and three different benefits? It's vital you read the question and follow it exactly. NO. i should've used vertical and horizontal integration and diversification. the three points i should've used .Diversification means companies can embrace new technology and find new revenue streams e.g. music industry and streaming .Identify new audiences and revenue streams (horizontal int.) .Maintain control and profit at every stage of chain of production (vertical int.)

5) Look at your answer for Question 2. Did you follow the question guidance and write about both the BBC and commercial broadcasters? What could you have added to this answer to reach a higher mark? i could've spoke about the meaning of BBC and the effect Tv has and what regulators are. "It is regulated by Ofcom so therefore maintaining standards and providing audiences somewhere to complain or raise objections to content." How some channels put their money back into the service to make it better "Channel 4 reinvests any profits back into programmes – this raises quality and benefits audiences."

6) Now look over your mark, teacher comments and the mark scheme for Question 3 - the 20 mark essay question on media effects theory. Write a new paragraph for this question based on the suggested theories/answers in the mark scheme. Make sure it is an extensive, detailed paragraph focused on the question and offering examples from the wider media. To some extents i agree with the view that the media has a damaging effect on the audiences, for example this is proven by a theorist called Gerbner (cultivation theory). This theory demonstrates that over a period of time watching Tv can influence the audiences ideas and perceptions in their everyday life. To some extent this theory is correct as TV is regulated by OfCom meaning everything being televised is monitored and wont show anything too violent or anything over inappropriate. This prevents young children from being influenced by these programmes and doesnt damage the audiences to impact their ideas of everyday life.
