Media regulation: blog task

Read the Factsheet and complete the following questions/tasks:

1) What is regulation and why do media industries need to be regulated?Regulators also provide somebody for audiences to complain to if they see something they don’t like. e.g. if something contains lots of blood and violence they'll be regulation on it to warn the people on what contents are going to be viewed.

2) What is OFCOM responsible for? OFCOM is dependant for regulating television, radio, telephone services and some aspects of the internet. OFCOM is also responsible to grant licences to TV and Radio so it isn't illegal for them to broadcast.
 3) Look at the section on the OFCOM broadcasting code. Which do you think are the three most important sections of the broadcasting code and why? Section 1: Protecting the Under-Eighteens: this is because it warns the viewers if the content which is being view isn't acceptable for people under 18 as it can cause mental problems encase a scene is too scary or violent. Section 2: Harm and Offence Section: Some content can be inappropriate and offence to multiple viewers which could make them uncomfortable so OFCOM can limit what is being released as it can be offence and harmful to viewers and can be traumatising to people.  4: Religion: some content being broadcasted can out cast religions and people may take offence to it and feel left out. also, it can make people feel as if their way of life is bad as some shows could make some religion statements look negative and inappropriate.

4) Do you agree with OFCOM that Channel 4 was wrong to broadcast 'Wolverine' at 6.55pm on a Sunday evening? Why? i do agree as it contains alot of blood and violence and if a under age  child saw that it could influence them to do bad. e.g. start to be violent and hit other people because they're trying to act like wolverine as use sharp objects as claws to harm others. Also, there's bad language in the film which could corrupt a child's mind and they start to be rude and reuse the language.

5) List five of the sections in the old Press Complaints Commission's Code of Practice. Section 7: Children in Sex Cases*  16: Payment to Criminals* Section 3: Privacy* Section 4: Harassment* Section 8: Hospitales*

6) Why was the Press Complaints Commission criticised?  In recent years, the PCC became the focus of a great deal of controversy. its critics claim that the lack of statutory powers means that when a
newspaper has been found to breah the rules, the best a victim can hope for is an apology, which often does not get sufficient prominence in the paper.

7) What was the Leveson enquiry and why was it set up?  Throughout 2011 and 2012, an inquiry into the “culture, practice and ethics of the press” was held, mainly as a result of the so-called phone hacking scandal. In January 2007, Clive Goodman (the royal reporter of the News of the World newspaer) and Glenn Mulcaire (a private investigator, employed by Goodman) were imprisoned for illegally intercepting phone calls connected to the royal family. At the time, the News of the World claimed that Goodman was a rogue reporter, working alone but it emerged during the Leveson Enquiry that phone hacking was much more widespread throughout the industry. The enquiry also looked at other areas of press behaviour that were considered questionable.

8) What was the PCC replaced with in 2014? the PCC was replaced by the Independent Press
Standards Organisation (IPSO).

9) What is your opinion on press regulation? Is a free press an important part of living in a democracy or should newspapers face statutory regulation like TV and radio? in my opinion i think press regulation should be limited as its invading peoples privacy and this could lead to their social lives to be effected as they wont be able to do everything they want without being monitored or stalked. on the other hand, i do think it should be free as its evidence of the situation as newspapers could make up lies without evidence but in this instinct it shows that what they said they're doing is backed up with photos.

10) Why is the internet so difficult to regulate? the internet is hard to regulate as its too big to monitor and there's multiple ways to access inappropriate things as the internet is constantly expanding as there's more and more uploads everyday.
