Introduction to feminism: blog tasks

1) Why did Laura Bates start the Everyday Sexism project?    Laura started this project to raise awareness of females getting sexually assaulted and verbally.  Laura felt that no one cared about this as shes had numerous encounters with this problem and felt that it should change and as of equality females are still getting treated negatively and as objects.

2) How does the Everyday Sexism project link to the concept of post-feminism? Is feminism still required in western societies?  It relates to the concept of post-feminism in the way of women finally getting the courage on speaking about the issues and realizing it should not be a casual thing to be harassed in the street.

3) Why was new technology essential to the success of the Everyday Sexism project? Sponsorship on famous or well known pages, hashtags and explore page.

4) Will there be a point in the future when the Everyday Sexism project is not required? What is YOUR view on the future of feminism? eventually, in the future women won't have to speak out about things as much as they do now and sites like the one Laura won't be required. In my opinion, the future of feminism looks successful as women of all ages are currently trying to raise this issue and find ways to over come this problem in society.

Media Magazine: The fourth wave?

Read the article: The Fourth Wave? Feminism in the Digital Age in MM55 (p64). You'll find the article in our Media Magazine archive here.
1) Summarise the questions in the first two sub-headings: What is networked feminism? Why is it a problem?

Networked feminism is the Fourth Wave; it aims to tackle social equality issues found both on, and using, modern technology. It is a problem because the internet has so many denominations, societies and communities of people who claim to be feminists, and equally as many for those who claim to be against it, and so definitions and ideologies can become blurred.

2) What are the four waves of feminism? Do you agree that we are in a fourth wave ‘networked feminism’?
I agree that we are in the fourth wave (digital feminism) as that is how the news of movement is spreading and therefore mos impact is coming from online.

3) Focus on the examples in the article. Write a 100-word summary of EACH of the following: Everyday Sexism, HeForShe, FCKH8 campaign, This Girl Can.
 Everyday Sexism
This project was created by Laura Bates. She had set it up in order to raise awareness of the different forms of sexual harassment that women face on a day to day basis. This project/website gave people a voice to share their experiences about what had happened to them etc. Also, this drew focus to the fact that these events occur quite regularly. The project gained recognition and became more well known due to its user-generated content and use of social media.

HeForShe
This focuses on the idea of having gender equality for males and women. Watson's campaign highlights the fact that feminism doesnt support equality.Like Everyday Sexism project by Laura, this project began on Twitter and other social media platforms to successfully campaign for feminism and promote the campaign focuses on. Watson used Q&A sessions to represent He For She and feminism as two integrated ideas, rather than two opposing ones.

FCKH8 Campaign
The FCKH8 campaign is one of the well-known digital campaigns. FCKH8 is a company favouring to profit. Therefore, their referencing to feminism and ideas of gender equality have been judged by members of the public. This is because they appear to be exploiting the values of feminism in order to earn a greater profit instead of its focus of raising awareness and trying to help with the issue. The advertisement also received backlash due to the fact that it showed young girls swearing. Despite the use of explicit language being seen as inappropriate and childish to some extents, some felt that it accurately represented the fact that there are young women in society who are not afraid to speak out etc.

This Girl Can
This Girl Can is a fitness campaign. This project has well received by members of the public as it promotes the importance of women's health and fitness, without body shaming them or exploiting their sexuality. This project involves sharing and posting pictures, videos and other content that does not focus on the physique of the females in a sexual way, but draws attention to the fact that these are strong women. This project has also received scrutiny by feminist activists.
4) What is your opinion with regards to feminism and new/digital media? Do you agree with the concept of a 'fourth wave' of feminism post-2010 or are recent developments like the Everyday Sexism project merely an extension of the third wave of feminism from the 1990s?  i agree with the concept of the fourth wave of feminism as females are beginning to become more open with the subject and starting to take action. This is shown by females reacting to the males who verbally or physically do things to them. further more, there's lot of campaigns, tweeter poles helping with these situations and how to resolve it whereas, they used to take the abuse and not react but now they're taking action.
